Connecting the 406

During my last semester of college, my classmates and I produced an hour-long documentary called "Connecting the 406". On our website, you can see much of the process that it took along with pictures of the crew (including myself). My responsibilities for my team were editing and shooting, but I also produced, shot, and edited one of the segments in the documentary that involved the Department of Justice. Apart from that, I was in charge of compiling music for the documentary along with another student. We were successful in almost completely using local bands for the score, and also got creative in the type of music we used. In the end, I was also in charge of editing all of the audio in the film as a whole. Watch the whole thing here: http://watch.montanapbs.org/video/1947199924/

Stop-Motion Animation: "Subconscious"

Stop-Motion Animation: "Subconscious" from Drew Stanley on Vimeo.

A stop-motion animation video I did for a Media Arts class during Wintersession 2011. The class was a semester's worth of work condensed into three weeks, and this was the final project. We edited using Final Cut Pro, and both the intro and outro sequences were shot using my friend's Nikon camera while the sequence in the middle was shot in the media arts department studio. The studio uses iStopMotion as their animation software.

The last UM News Silver Team Show, 12.08.10

The last UM News Silver Team Show, 12.08.10 from Drew Stanley on Vimeo.

One of the three UM News shows that I directed Fall Semester 2010. UM News is a class that is required for all seniors majoring in Radio/Television Production or Broadcast Journalism. It simulates an actual newsroom, splitting the class up into two teams. Every week, we would be partnered up with a reporter after pitching stories to go out and shoot, script, and edit. The producer and director of the show that week would then meet with our two professors for the class to decide who would get a package on the show and then what stories would be used for VO and VO/SOTs. After we record the show, it would appear on KECI-TV the following day. The Radio/Television and Broadcast Journalism department in the School of Journalism is equipped with a control room, studio, auxiliary studio, and newsroom for students to use. This sort of "real world" experience prepares students for their careers in the best ways possible.

Hair Fever

Hair Fever from Drew Stanley on Vimeo.

A news package that I pitched, shot, and edited for UM News. My partner was the reporter, and he wrote the script and did the voiceover. The package appeared on our weekly news show and on KECI-TV as a VO/SOT/VO. It was also submitted to the 2011 Society of Professional Journalists Awards. The package won 1st place in the Region 10 (Pacific Northwest) Television News Photography category. Because it won 1st place, the package will move on to nationals where it will once again be judged for an award.

Patrolling the Big Sky Aviation Segment

Patrolling the Big Sky Segment from Drew Stanley on Vimeo.

My segment from our Montana Journal documentary "Patrolling the Big Sky". The intro was shot and edited by another student as a transition from his segment to mine, and then mine starts right afterward (the first interview shot). The documentary was approximately a half an hour long, and we had a full movie premiere in a theater on the University of Montana campus along with a premiere on Montana PBS three days afterward. My partner and I shot and edited all shots in our segment, but the voiceover was done by a professional voice at Montana PBS. The documentary in its entirety won 2nd place in Region 10 (Pacific Northwest) at the 2011 Society of Professional Journalists Awards Ceremony for Television In-Depth Reporting. A DVD copy is available through me upon request.

A 30 second promo that I made for my class called Montana Journal. We did a 30-minute documentary on the Montana Highway Patrol, and it premiered in the UC Theater on the University of Montana campus. All shots that have anything to do with aviation in them were shot by myself and my partner Kristina Matsalak. Everything else was done by different students in the class.

KECI-TV Production Demo Reel

Final Cut of Demo for KECI-TV from Drew Stanley on Vimeo.

A demo reel that I made for KECI-TV's production website. I didn't shoot any of this, but I picked out all of the shots, edited them together, and picked out the music. It was my big project throughout my internship, but I do not claim any sort of ownership to it.

Hospice of Missoula

Hospice from Drew Stanley on Vimeo.

A commercial I helped produce for Hospice of Missoula during my internship with KECI-TV, Missoula's NBC affiliate. I did commercial productions and also helped shoot news promos. I did this for six weeks in the summer of 2010. In this video, I didn't shoot any of the testimonials, but I helped with the lighting on the subjects. I edited it together, put in graphics, and then shot the river shot for the billboard at the end.

Business Made in Montana: HCR Incorporated

Business: Made in Montana - HCR Incorporated from Drew Stanley on Vimeo.

A segment that I shot and edited for a student documentary my class did called "Business: Made in Montana". My partners were Emily Adamson and Kristina Matsalak. All of the segments for Made in Montana will appear on Montana PBS in August 2010. This video is now being used on Jameson Door Company's website and it is used for international business trips that they have to break language barriers. Their process is very hard to explain but they said that we had done it perfectly.

Unnoticed

Unnoticed from Drew Stanley on Vimeo.

This was my Final Project in my Introduction to Non-Linear Editing class. It's completely still frame shots. We were not graded on picture quality as it was not a photography class, although some of the shots are color corrected. I edited this with Final Cut Pro and did some sound design with Soundtrack Pro.
